NCAA NBA Draft Picks Informational Design
Project Type: Information Design, Poster Design
October 2023
Every June the National Basketball Association holds its annual draft lottery during which teams in the league select new players, most of which have historically been college players. Since the first NBA draft in 1947 there have been around 1500 players chosen in the first round of the draft with approximately 90% of those players coming from NCAA Division I teams. Additionally, 70 of the 77 first overall picks have been NCAA Division I players with Duke University leading the list having 5 players picked. While the top teams have fluctuated over the years, these 5 Universities have consistently had a dominant presence in the draft and collectively account for about 16% of first round draft picks since the draft began. Utilizing industry standard design styles, the graph uniquely depicts NCAA teams with the most draft picks overall and over the last three decades.
The three graphs represent the top 10 NCAA mens basketball teams with the most first round NBA draft picks over there past 30 years broken down by decade. The total number of picks is listed at the top while the bars of each graph are further broken down and labeled to show how many of each overall pick each team has had by color. Through the graphs you can see the rise and fall of teams over the past three decades and the consistent success of the Blue Bloods.
Inspired by my poster illustrating the NCAA teams with the most first-round NBA draft picks, I embarked on the creative journey of designing a complementary website. This online platform serves as an interactive extension of the poster, offering a more dynamic and comprehensive exploration of the data. Users can now navigate through a visually appealing and user-friendly interface, accessing detailed information about each NCAA team, historical trends, and learn more about each individual draft pick. The website aims to provide an immersive experience, combining insightful content with a visually engaging design to cater to basketball enthusiasts and those interested in the intersection of collegiate and professional basketball.
